PETERSFIELD’S mayor, vicar and residents have joined forces in condemning a flyer preaching “hatred and intolerance” that has been delivered to homes in the town in the aftermath of the terror attacks in Paris.
The A4 sized leaflets were delivered during Sunday night after 129 people were killed and hundreds more were wounded in the French capital. The text used on it links the atrocities to tomorrow’s Petersfield Neighbourhood Plan (PNP) referendum.
It said: “On Friday, November 13, scores of white people were slaughtered as Paris provided no protection.
“Subjugation to various human rights agreements as per the Petersfield Plan means we will be forced to accommodate an infinite number of non-white refugees” and ended “Vote no on Thursday,” (to the PNP).

“We are investigating these and will be patrolling around polling stations, which is standard practice.”
The flyer was delivered to homes in Penns Road, Oaklands Road, on Herne Farm, Sussex Road, Dragon Street, and Woodbury Avenue.
Petersfield vicar, the Rev Will Hughes, was one recipient and said: “This extremely unattractive flyer is full of hatred and intolerance. It is totally the opposite of what we stand for and we have to respond in the opposite way.”
Petersfield Mayor Lesley Farrow said: “We are lucky to have the right of free speech, but this is racist – how can people be so vicious? The attacks in Paris were appalling, and this is beyond belief.”
John Hilton, of Woodbury Avenue, said: “Some of it is racist and aggressive, as well as misleading and inaccurate. Much of it is laughable, but it is worrying that it is being distributed in Petersfield.”
Another resident said the flyer had scared an elderly woman she knew so badly, the pensioner was now unsure how to vote.
Those for and against the PNP stress the “inaccurate and offensive” flyer is nothing to do with either group, and should be ignored.
East Hampshire District Council said the referendum will go ahead as planned.
