PLANS how Petersfield will work in future could be revealed by the end of the year, believes a local councillor.

An online workshop on the town centre and road junctions, and its conclusions, saw East Hampshire District Council reminding delegates it hadn’t been a public event.

Proposals such as Lavant Street being one way, bus stops in The Square moving to Waitrose car park, and two sides of The Square being closed to traffic, were debated.

Rob Mocatta is the Hampshire county councillor for the Petersfield division, and East Hampshire district councillor for East Meon and Buriton.

He was one of 30 delegates, including representatives from town, district and county councils, South Downs National Park Authority and organisations such as The Petersfield Society.

He said: “It’s hopeful plans will be made public by the end of the year, with work starting next year.”

Issues at junctions such as at Pulens Lane/Durford Road, Hylton Road/The Causeway and Tilmore Gardens/Station Road will be addressed in a bid to make the junctions safer.

But it appears increasingly unlikely there will be roundabouts at any of them.

Then the focus will shift to the town centre.

Ideas put forward include traffic flowing along St Peter’s Road, past the church and down Sheep Street on one side of The Square; the turn to the post office would go.

On the other side, traffic could travel along the High Street on to Chapel Street, but not able to turn into The Square past Fat Face.

Parking on a one-way Lavant Street looks set to stay, while High Street parking could go.

Cllr Mocatta said: “I really liked the idea of moving the bus stop to Waitrose car park, taking buses off Lavant Street and the High Street.

“Instead they would go along Station Road, down into the car park and on to the one-way system.”

The workshop on March 8 was hosted by East Hampshire District Council’s place-making team.
