MORE than 230 campaigners have called for a Petersfield road they say is dangerous for families, school children and motorists to be made safer.

Their online petition highlights fears about cars speeding along Winchester Road from the A3 to the Bell Hill, and also that there isn’t anywhere safe to cross.

It says the amount and speed of the traffic using the road, endangers pedestrians trying to cross the road at the entrance to Stoneham Park estate and at Beckham Lane.

It also says as there is almost no pavement from the estate entrance to the roundabout “pushchair and wheel chair users all have to walk on the road.”

Kathy and Tim Dilks have lived on Stoneham Park since the 1980s and say the number of cars on Winchester Road and the speed they travel at has grown “alarmingly.”

Allison Johns of Beckham Lane said: “I’m signing the petition as I see on a daily basis the chances people take to cross the road.

“Families, walkers, and dog walkers have to cross the road and traffic levels and speeds are getting worse.”

Another resident who signed the petition said: “I cross it daily and cars do not do 30 mph, more like 60mph, and it’s really scary to cross.

“’m surprised someone hasn’t been injured. Don’t let it be until someone is injured to do something.”

Residents signing the petition which will go to East Hampshire District Council have asked for traffic calming, speed limit enforcement, pavement widening, and for a safe crossing near the estate.

But the council says it has no legal obligation to heed to the views expressed in the petition; but it says it will make the relevant officers and councillors aware of it once it is delivered.

And although the council carries out road safety reviews for Hampshire County Council, it doesn’t have the say on major safety works.

And the county council’s view remains unchanged; unless a road has a history of injury accidents, it is unlikely safety work will be done.
