THE return of Harting Horticultural Society Summer Show saw more entries than the previous one, and a big turnout of spectators enjoying the day.

The show on Saturday, August 14, at the playing fields in South Harting, was the first one for two years.

The resurrected event came after the society had to cancel its shows from summer 2019 because of the pandemic lockdowns.

Show spokesman Cynthia Clue of Harting said: “Our Summer Show was a great success.

“The grand marquee was packed with people, many families with children, and lots of older people.

“Everyone was happy and smiling and the classes were well supported.

“But there was a lack of roses in the flower sections this year, because of the inclement weather just when they were ready to blossom.

“As usual, the vegetables were looking splendid, and there were beautiful flower arrangements of various kinds.

“The standard in the large photography entry was high, as it was in the handicrafts and art sections.

“There were more entries this year in the children’s sections, artistic, talented modelling and art.

“Everyone appeared to enjoy themselves, especially the children, who were playing skittles and eating ice cream.

“Meanwhile the adults made good use of the tea and cake stall.

“As a part of Harting’s history we feel it is important to keep the village traditions alive, and the show was altogether a happy occasion.”

The society has been around for more than 70 years and usually holds two shows a year, spring and summer.

And with more than 150 members, this year’s come-back summer show was as popular as ever.
