A?WEEKEND?to remember in Rogate was rounded off with songs of praise and a hearty hog roast.
And the village’s own nonagenarian, Georgina Boorman, was serenaded with a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday.
She was delighted to be recognised amid all the flags and bunting alongside the Queen, for her 90 years.
An extra special annual fete was held in the village on Saturday, and the celebrations continued the following day.
The Rev Edward Doyle led some 80 parishioners in a service of readings and hymns celebrating the Queen’s birthday.
Then 150 people sat down to food from the hog roast in the marquee on the playing fields.
Taking on the cooking duties was Dave Dawtry and his team who roasted the meat over an open fire, with some bewildered cows watching over the hedge.
Villagers sat on long trestle tables in the decorated marquee, tucking into the fare which kept the chill away on a day which saw rain clouds gather over proceedings.
The overall organisation of the catering was carried out by Jenny Peters and her helpers.
The loyal toast was proposed by Elizabeth Brown of Rogate Parish Council, the founder of the feast.
Villager Mairi Rennie said:?“It was a once in a lifetime party for Georgina, Rogate, our nation and the Queen.”
Visitors to both patriotic events in the village will no doubt have well and truly endorsed her words with a wave of a Union Jack and a clink of a glass.
