HAMPSHIRE residents are being advised that hessian bags they may spot alongside roads where rainwater may flow on to the road are helping prevent the water freezing and causing dangerous icy patches.
The so called ‘salt wick’ bags contain salt, and as the water passes through them it increases in salinity, which helps prevent ice forming.
The bags have been placed along stretches of road where water flows off bordering land, especially in recognised flood spots, on to the carriageway, and which in freezing weather turns into ice.
