A ROYAL Navy press officer from Petersfield has made news of her own – by winning a top honour for her work in a disaster zone.

Samantha Chapman (34) was awarded a Commendation from the Fleet Commander for her “outstanding” contribution during the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan.

Deployed on HMS Daring, she was heavily involved in the UK aid relief effort after the typhoon struck the Philippines, killing more than 6,300 people.

Sam was the media officer on board for three weeks, under close and relentless scrutiny from international press. But she kept her calm and has been recognised for her professionalism under difficult circumstances.

Her citation states: “HMS Daring was under an intense media spotlight but Sam’s modest demeanour and strong interpersonal skills meant she became a highly effective member of the Daring team.” A former newspaper journalist, Sam is married to Navy lieutenant Liam Flatt.

She said: “To be awarded a Commendation and to be the only civilian is an honour of which I am extremely proud. My time on HMS Daring was a test of everything I know, professionally as a PR expert and journalist, but also as a human being.
