SHEET Women’s Institute members gathered on The Millennium Field in Sheet to commemorate the long life and reign of Queen Elizabeth 11 by planting a native English oak tree.

Sheet WI president Nicky Gummerson said: “Four former presidents of Sheet WI were present, and more than 20 members gathered for the short planting ceremony.”

The tree was planted as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project. It was launched earlier this year as a nationwide initiative to mark the Queens’ Platinum Jubilee through planting 1m-tall trees, and was set to end in December – the end of the Jubilee year. But it is now extended to March 2023 to give people the chance to plant trees in memoriam to honour Her Majesty.

The WI planting of the oak sapling at Sheet on Thursday, October 7, was held in warm autumn sunshine.

Sheet WI was formed in 1935 and meets on the first Thursday of every month.

Tomorrow’s meeting (November 2) at 7.30pm in Herne Farm Leisure Centre will hear Tim O’Kelly of One Tree Books recommend books for Christmas. For details email Nicky Gummerson at [email protected]
