A SHIPWRECK hunter has released a book telling the tales of some of the most fascinating finds of his career.

David Mearns, who lives in Midhurst, has published his third book called The Shipwreck Hunter.

It tells the stories behind nine shipwrecks which he has uncovered.

“My entire professional career has been doing this. I started specialising in shipwrecks a little bit later,” he said.

“Virtually every ship that I go after and find, it starts the research into the clues about where it sank.

“That leads me to research the history of the ship, why it sank and the people who were on board and the stories, so it’s not just a technical expedition of the greatest depths of the ocean to find them.

“It’s also about what’s so interesting about this ship that they need to be found and investigated.”

David was involved in finding the wreck of HMS Hood, which was sunk in the Second World War, and recovered the bell from the ship, which is now on display at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard. It was unveiled by the Princess Royal.
