Residents on a Petersfield road have spoken of their shock after a man was charged with attempted murder last week.

Cranford Road was taped off last Thursday (March 14) following a serious assault around 12.15pm that left a man with life-threatening injuries.

The 62-year-old victim, who was taken to hospital by South Central Ambulance, is now in a stable condition with a 58-year-old man being subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The man has since been charged and named with Martin Copeland, also of Cranford Road, being remanded in custody to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court on April 14.

Police have since conducted door-to-door enquiries but believe the assault is an isolated incident.

But although that’s a view shared by the Cranford Road and Grange Road residents who the Post spoke to early this week, some have called the incident “frightening” and “scary” with some claiming the area is taking a turn for the worse.

Anyone with information is urged to call Hampshire Police on 101 quoting crime reference number 44240110256.
