A SUPERMARKET has made a meal – or 1,805 – of a foodbank boosting event.

Now bosses at Tesco in Petersfield have given a huge thank you to customers for their generosity shown towards those less well off than themselves.

Over three days there was a food collection in store as part a nationwide campaign to help reduce hunger in the UK. During this sixth annual Neighbourhood Food Collection last month, tins, dried goods and other items were handed in, totalling the equivalent of 1,805 meals.

“Petersfield is an affluent area and customers are very generous,” said store manager Steve Williams. “It’s very satisfying when a

customer donates three or four big bags of shopping.

“It is our company message to use our scale for good and we are trying to do that in the community. I?would like to say a massive thank you to our customers for their support.” The donations are sorted and delivered by charities the Trussell Trust and FareShare.

Petersfield mayor Lesley Farrow, who supports the initiative, said: “It’s awful in this day and age that people have to rely on foodbanks.”

Nationally, 3.6 million meals were collected as the number of visitors to foodbanks continues to increase.
