IT WAS a time for banquets and sacrifices, and of worshipping the deity Saturn.

The masters of two thousand years ago even waited on their servant’s tables during the festivities.

Find out more about how our ancestors celebrated this time of year, at Butser Ancient Farm’s Saturnalia: The Roman ‘Christmas’ event on Friday, December 18.

This is a special session, from 2-3pm, for children to discover the ancient traditions of the winter solstice, with a gift and craft activities.

Prices are £12 per child including one free adult.

After Saturnalia, join the Butser team around a camp fire with hot chocolate for festive tales and singing in the atmospheric Roundhouse.

Tales of Winter Magic! Storytelling with Red Phoenix costs £12 per child including a free adult.
