PLANS to ‘brand’ protect food and drink produced in the South Downs National Park have been a given a boost by Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss.

On a visit to Butser Ancient Farm she learned that the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) is pursuing European Union (EU) protection for local food and drink products.

A park spokesman said: “Hampshire Down and Southdown sheep arguably produce the best lamb in Europe.

“Also notable are the high quality white and red wines, and gin, and lots more quality food and drink products.

“We want to protect them and their geographical location, by registering them with the EU.

“It’s a bit like Champagne, only sparkling wine produced in the Champagne region can be so called. This protection is vital to safeguard local products.

“But to be successful the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has to support our application to the EU.”

EU recognition protects the reputation of regional products and promote traditional agricultural activity.

At present, 64 UK?products have protected status, and more than one-third are produced in English national parks.

The Minister heard that visitor surveys had revealed local food and drink is the most important draw, after landscape, for 60 per cent of visitors to the South Downs National Park.

She said: “These things can be tricky, but the Government, through Defra, is very happy to advise and help the SDNPA with any applications for product protection.”

SDNPA has combined with The Southern Co-operative and Natural Partnerships community interest company to create the South Downs Food brand. For more details visit www.southdownsfood.org
