THE MUSICIANS of Liss and Petersfield are once again combining to launch the Spirit of Music Festival, now in its fourth year.
Each year a number of professional players and singers get together to provide a range of inclusive and accessible concerts to suit a broad range of tastes, plus a variety of workshops which encourage the public to make music in a relaxed setting.
This year, the music ranges from folk to baroque and includes a string quartet, brass band, choir and orchestra. The week begins with Flight Brigade playing an acoustic set in St Peter’s Church, West Liss, on Friday, April 28.
The official opening on the next day is by Liss Band, playing outdoors on the green at the Triangle, Liss, followed by a brass workshop for anyone who wants to play with a large band or try out the training section.
That evening, St Mary’s Church in Liss hosts Swing and Dance with The Havant Youth Band and the Joel Knee Jazz Combo.
On Sunday, April 30, the Rotherhurst String Quartet will play Mozart and Mendelssohn while listeners enjoy a cream tea at St Peter’s Church in West Liss.
An open masterclass on baroque string playing follows on Tuesday, May 2.
The Triangle in Liss will show John Bridcut’s film Requiem on Friday, May 5, with a chance to chat with the producer and enjoy a drink and canapes.
On Saturday May 6, there will be workshops for young string players and for singers of all ages in the morning, followed by an afternoon chamber music concert in St Peter’s, Petersfield, and a choral concert there in the evening, when The Petersfield Choir and SouthDowns Camerata will perform.
On Sunday, May 7, an afternoon concert in St Mary’s Church, Liss, gathers the Camerata, guitar virtuoso Amanda Cook and Liss Forest Ballet School.
