Many newspapers run campaigns. But few, if any, campaigns could ever be as important as this one being run jointly with East hampshire District Council, writes Petersfield Post and Herald Editor Colin Channon.
Because if the Stay Safe, Shop Local message falls on deaf ears, we face losing the character of our high streets. For ever.
Local traders have never had it so tough. Internet shopping was already hitting those businesses which believe bricks and mortar, the human touch and face-to-face customer service are vital.
Then along came a pandemic which forced a shutdown. And when they were allowed to reopen, they have been stymied by a whole range of restrictions – as well as an understandable fear from many of their customers that staying home is far safer than venturing out and interacting with people.
Our Stay Safe, Shop Local campaign, in conjunction with East Hampshire District Council, aims to convince shoppers their local high streets are safe.
Shops are Covid compliant. They will help their customers follow all the rules and regulations, and still give them a personal service the internet can never hope to match.
If we can’t support local traders now, when they need us most, they won’t survive. And the look and feel of our town centres will be lost forever.
So please support our campaign. From today, and right through the run-up to Christmas, remember to check out your local stores. They are there to help.
