PETERSFIELD Town Council agrees the town centre and high street is under threat – and is urging residents to shop local in the run-up to Christmas and beyond.

New businesses have opened in the town recently, and the council says support like the Stay Safe, Shop Local campaign is welcome.

Petersfield Town Council clerk Neil Hitch said: “The impact of Covid-19 on the retail sector of Petersfield has been significant.

“It is to the great credit of businesses that so many continued to trade despite it, and to provide the range and breadth of services and facilities available to the town and surrounding communities.

“The economic vitality of market towns like Petersfield is crucial, not just to residents but all those living in the villages around the town who rely on Petersfield for so many of their needs.

“It is also extremely welcome to see some new retail enterprises starting up during this difficult time for such businesses. The town has a rich mix of nationally-recognised chains interspersed with many local independent shops that provide variety and vibrancy to the retail sector of the town.

“It is incredibly important that this mix of offering is supported.

“And anything that can be done to increase the amount spent in the local retail stores of the town to achieve this end is welcomed.”

There will still also be the Christmas lights display, Saturday, Wednesday and farmers’ markets, at least one cheap parking day, Small Business Saturday, on the cards, with more being discussed.
