THE ROOTS of an environmentally-friendly Transition Town in Petersfield are taking shape following a tea party at Winton House.

Around 20 people attended the introductory event on Saturday morning, which was on the theme of ‘food’.

Sue Edberg gave a talk about Petersfield Community Garden – how it has grown, how it has help from local groups and funding received for fruit trees.

The work that Winton House in High Street does with Marks and Spencer on distributing the store’s food past its sell by date to various charities, was outlined by Amanda Greenlee.

There was also chat about the Incredible Edible Network, a thriving food growing project in Yorkshire.

With the people at the meeting interested in the idea of setting up a Transition Petersfield, helping to make the town’s future a stronger, more sustainable one, there was discussion about supporting local food producers and outlets, and contacting the town council about where food can be grown here.

“All topics had the common goal of supporting local business and reducing the town’s carbon footprint. And we had lots of tea and cake,” enthused organiser Julie Yardley.
