THE TERRAPIN population of Petersfield Heath pond may be growing – in a rare picture taken by Titian Fleming of Weston, three are seen sunbathing.
And since 2013 it’s been recognised nationally the reptiles could be breeding. The predators, which eat fish, frogs, and even small ducklings, have been laying eggs, but warm weather is needed for them to hatch. The Canal and River Trust said climate change could be the catalyst that provides the right conditions. A spokesman added: “We’d be keen to hear from anyone who sees a match-box sized terrapin. It would help determine if they are breeding.” Call it on 0303 040 4040.
