The MILLENNIUM Centre Cinema in Liphook is showing tonight (Friday, March 4), A Walk in the Woods, based on Bill Bryson’s acclaimed book of his adventure walking the 2,000 mile long Appalachian Trail.
Bill Bryson was born in the American Mid-West, but has spent most of his adult life living in the UK.
He is a best-selling Anglo-American author of humorous books on travel, as well as books on the English language and science. He has had a very distinguished career here in the UK. A former Chancellor of Durham University, he was President of the Campaign to Protect Rural England for five years, is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society and was awarded OBE for his contribution to literature.
During his time in the United States, he decided to walk the Appalachian Trail with his friend Stephen Katz (a pseudonym), about which he wrote the book A Walk in the Woods. In this 2015 film adaptation of the book, he is portrayed by Academy Award winner Robert Redford and Katz is portrayed by Nick Nolte.
