SUSAN Hampshire, actress and life-long champion of people with dyslexia, has become vice-patron of the Frensham-based Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity.

Susan, Lady Kulukundis, known professionally by her maiden name Susan Hampshire, shares the enthusiasm of the charity’s Royal Patron, HRH Princess Beatrice, in helping children and adults with dyslexia to succeed on their own terms.

For many years, Susan has been a loyal and active friend of Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity which last year celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Susan was one of the charity’s high-profile supporters when it was set up by Helen Arkell in 1971. She has frequently attended the charity’s events and has spoken on the charity’s behalf in support of its work.

Susan Hampshire is a three-time Emmy Award winner, known for her roles in The Forsyte Saga, Vanity Fair and Monarch of the Glen.

Her OBE and CBE recognise her dedication to her charity work, including her support of people with dyslexia – a cause close to her heart as she was diagnosed with dyslexia at 30, after many years struggling to read.

On her appointment as vice-patron, Susan said: “Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity works tirelessly to help adults and children with dyslexia as well as helping education professionals to understand how to teach children with dyslexia.

“I’m delighted to be able to continue to help the charity’s cause and spread the word that anyone with dyslexia can achieve anything with the right help.”

Andy Cook, chief executive of the charity, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Susan has agreed to become our vice patron. She is a national treasure, and one of the first people to campaign for the rights and opportunities of people with dyslexia, alongside our founder, Helen Arkell. I am sure Helen will look down on this appointment from above with great approval and great pride!”
