A landmark project is going to the wire as the framework is now in place for a milestone Remembrance event in Petersfield.
But organisers of the Petersfield Poppy Project need your help in tying down the centrepiece for this November’s service after months of seeing red.
More than 15,000 knitted and crocheted poppies have now been produced – nearly 10,000 more than the original target – in a community bid to create a stunning backdrop for this year’s Remembrance.
The project took a big step forward on Saturday as a group of “Crafty Codgers” from Liss Mens Shed constructed the wooden framework for the installation.
“We’re making 12 frames and they will be about 2.6metres in height, and they will also be varnished and have chicken wire attached to them,” said Danny Cronin, foreman and one of a handful of ‘Codgers’ who helped out.
The town has massively backed the project with Travis Perkins, JB Corrie, Sew Creative, Petersfield Town Council and the Winton House Centre among the many who have donated materials and provided support.
“We’ve well and truly smashed the target and today is another example of how we’re overwhelmed by the kindness and support from the community,” said Rosemary Roberts.
The “whole church porch” will be covered in the poppies with some being sent in from afar as Auckland, Montreal and Toronto.
But now it’s time to start putting it all together and organisers need a big helping hand from volunteers as a bid to tie 15,000 poppies to the wire begins this Wednesday (October 1) in St Peter’s.
If you can spare some time to help pop into the church between 9.30am and 2.30pm every Monday to Thursday, or from midday and 10.15am to 2.30pm, respectively, on Saturdays and Sundays.
