BURITON horticulturist Nicky Easton swept the board to take the President’s Cup at the Buriton Show.

The cup is awarded to best exhibitor in the show, and this year, the first show post pandemic and since 2019, it was Nicky’s turn (see results below).

The show, with its theme of pollinators, buzzed with life, storming back with what committee chairman Buzz Cousins described as the best party the village has enjoyed since 2019.

And the show also launched an exciting pilot project in Buriton to promote pollinators – the bees, butterflies and other insects we rely on to pollinate plant life. Hampshire Wildlife Trust, Petersfield Beekeepers and other local experts buzzed around, enthusing visitors – especially children – with bright ideas about how to encourage wildlife around the parish.

One of the most popular attractions was Butterfly Alley – to guess how many butterflies were fluttering around the floral display – at Manor Barn.

Buzz said: “It was a charming art installation on the theme of pollinators, by our hosts at Manor Barn, Patrick and Sarah Figgis.”

They generously opened their barn so the show could be split between there and the recreation ground to help with social distancing.

It was also a gallery for a colourful and skillful exhibition of pollinator pictures by pupils from Buriton Village School.

The overall winner was Beau in Year 1, with his drawing of a busy bee.

Prizes also went to Maia, aged seven, and Arabella.

School leaver Edward, from Year 6, was highly commended for the precise detail of his illustration of a honey bee.

And the Findlay brothers also had a great afternoon, with budding Olympian Jayden Findlay, aged nine, winning the junior sprint and middle distance Round the Rec races.

And his brother Connor Findlay, 11, won first prize for his Lego model of a Disneyland castle.
