PETERSFIELD Town Council is planning to make up to £20,000 available to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War in 1918.
A wide of range ideas has been suggested, and now a small group of councillors is looking at what can and can’t be done.
Among the many proposals are Edwardian music hall acts in the Festival Hall each evening for a week.
There are plans to make the annual commemoration service and act of Remembrance on Sunday, November 11, a special event to mark the centenary.
These include releasing doves or white pigeons, one for every name engraved on Petersfield War Memorial, and a volley of gunfire at the Remembrance service.
Shops will also be asked to get involved – Petersfield Royal British Legion is to ask if they will put a silhouette of a soldier in their windows with the details of one of the Servicemen named on the memorial.
The council wants as many residents, schools, theatre and music groups, churches, charities, businesses and parish councils from the surrounding villages as possible to get involved.
It is hoped that as well as the Festival Hall, commemoration events can be organised at venues across the town. These include, among others, The Heath, The Square, Petersfield Football Club, the water meadows next to Borough Road, and Petersfield Museum.
A field of poppies, and a large wall mural of poppies which every resident and child can paint a small part of, have also been suggested.
The next meeting of the commemoration working party is on January 23, in the town hall. For more information, to offer help or put forward ideas, contact the council on 01730 264182.
