THE FIRST bank holiday in May is associated with traditional rural events and there are plenty of attractions around East Hampshire for all the family to enjoy.

Haslemere’s Charter Fair comes to the heart of the town centre on Monday with its traditional fairground rides, stalls and amusements, in High Street and West Street. There are no admission charges to the fair, which is open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, and benefits many charities and organisations.

Another popular returning event is the three-day food festival at the Weald and Downland Living Museum at Singleton, north of Chichester.

Guest Chef at this year’s event is Gill Meller, of River Cottage fame, who will be demonstrating in the cookery theatre. Food will be cooked in the Tudor kitchen on the site and there will be a range of talks and displays on food and drink through the ages as well as more than 70 trade stands.

Usual admission fees apply. For details, visit the website at: www.wealddown.co.uk

The National Trust house at South Harting, Uppark, starts its season celebrating women on Saturday and Sunday with talks on Emma Hamilton and singer Kirsty Merryn will be performing in the garden on Monday. Hinton Ampner house at Cheriton is closed but there is a guided estate walk on Monday.
