TREES around Petersfield Square are to be replaced to prevent residents tripping over paving slabs pushed up by their roots.

The three silver maples, two large trees by the High Street and one small one opposite Caffe Nero, will be replaced with smaller maples.

Paving stones on the Square are being damaged and pushed out of place by tree roots, presenting trip hazards to pedestrians.

The new trees will be planted in specially-dug ‘tree pits’ constructed to encourage the roots to grow downwards.

The old trees will be removed on Monday, November 30, and the paving slabs repaired and replaced, and replanting of the replacement trees will follow soon after.
