THE WARM glow left by a firework display fizzled out for a Petersfield woman with the discovery her car had been vandalised.

Melanie Hughes lives in Frenchmans Road, and on Saturday night (November 5) she and friends enjoyed the Bell Hill fireworks display organised by Petersfield Round Table; the event raises money for local charities.

But early the next morning she and her neighbours found wing mirrors had been wrenched off their cars and vans parked along Frenchmans Road.

The Head of Finance, Planning and Performance at The Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford said: “Saturday night at the fireworks was great, but Sunday morning wasn’t so good.

“My neighbour was up early and discovered the cars had had been vandalised, and we think about £1,200 of damage was done.

“I’ll have to pay mine myself as my insurance excess means it’s not worth claiming on the policy.

“It’s really upsetting, Saturday night at the fireworks was a really good evening which raises money for charity, and then you wake up to a really uncharitable act like this, it ruined the weekend.”

Frenchmans Road is not normally busy on a Saturday night added Melanie, leaving her wondering if the damage was done by people leaving the firework display and heading into town.

She said: “Hundreds of people went along Frenchmans Road from the display, it was busy I and my friends went another way into town, so didn’t notice if the cars had been damaged then, but it’s upsetting to think it may have been someone at the fundraising fireworks who did this.”

She said her neighbour had called the police about the vandalism, and they were still awaiting a response.
