A MINUTE’S silence for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire in London was held by members of Petersfield’s Royal British Legion branch before a ceremonial flag-raising.

Veterans wearing their medals gathered on Monday morning outside the Petersfield Town Council offices at the Festival Hall to see the raising of the Armed Forces Day Flag. This is an annual event to recognise the service and sacrifice of veterans and of those serving now, and it marks the start of Armed Forces Week.

Branch president Jimmy Stockley said: “We need to remember all those who have given their lives and who are currently serving.”

Flags were also raised at St Peter’s Church in The Square, at the offices of East Hampshire District Council at Penns Place, Petersfield, and at the Great Hall in Winchester for Hampshire County Council.
