PETERSFIELD residents concerned about the future of the town centre and pollution by cars are appealing for people to join their campaign to pedestrianise the High Street.
Debate about the issue has rumbled on for many years; in the past shopkeepers have been adamant that removing cars from the street would mean less passing trade for them.
But campaigners insist there are enough car parks serving the town centre, and that current parking on the High Street is only for a limited time – and not enough time for the town to benefit from ‘stop-and-buy’ visitors.
Local teacher Paul Turner said: “Petersfield is fortunate in having a road layout that strongly supports a pedestrianised high street – and it also has ample car parks close to the High Street.
“Cars don’t spend money, people do – and it would certainly help businesses the longer people are here in a more appealing environment.
“In addition to the strong business case, pedestrianisation would improve the air quality and create a healthier place.
“Road safety is another concern and vehicles have been involved in 48 incidents in and around the High Street in the past ten years with three fatalities, and pedestrianising it would make it safer for all users.”
The group also say Hampshire County Council missed a trick by re-arranging the new coronavirus parking restrictions aimed at making the town centre a safer place for visitors.
Paul added: “The impacts of climate change and Covid-19 makes an even stronger case for these actions.
“But there has been considerable debate around the emergency travel measures in the High Street and its surrounding streets.
“Many of the most vocal voices in Petersfield seem to be sharing views contrary to the evidence provided by organisations such as Living Streets and Sustrans.
“It is unfortunate the council decided to repeal some of the initial measures as this has left a halfway house that neither supports pedestrians nor facilitates drivers and has therefore been detrimental to all users.”
