SOUTH East Water is offering advice on how to deal with frozen pipes and what to do if pipes burst as the region braces for a further drop in temperature, and heavy snow.

South East Water’s Head of Operations Steve Andrews said: “Our work to find and fix leaks quickly doesn’t stop even in an extreme cold snap like this.

“When we become aware of a problem on our network affecting we add the details to our website.

“If customers have a problem, check our web site first as this will be a good indicator if the issue is likely to be with our network.

“They should also check with their neighbours to see if they are experiencing problems too.

“If they are, it could be a problem on our network and they should check the website southeastwater.co.uk or call us on 0333 000 0002.

“However, if it appears they are the only one with a problem, they should check for frozen pipes and take the right action to prevent a burst and the damage that can cause.”

If pipes are frozen, turn off the water at the stop tap, and slowly thaw the pipe with hot water bottles or a towel soaked in hot water, starting at the end nearest to the tap. Never use a naked flame or blowtorch

If pipes burst, turn off the water at stop tap, open all sink and bath taps to drain the system quickly, and then soak up, or block off, escaping water with thick towels.

If water has leaked near, or into, electric appliances or sockets, switch the supply off at the mains.
