A Child’s Christmas in Wales – a new adaptation of Dylan Thomas’ much-loved lyrical story by award-winning local theatre group West Meon Theatre – has sold out in just two weeks.

Tickets for all three nights of the production – a nostalgic and romanticised vision of Christmas past from the knee-high view of a young boy - were snapped up as soon as they went on sale.

It means there are no seats available for the three nights – which includes supper - at West Meon Village Hall on November 26, 27 and 28.

As a result, play director Mary Dawson has decided to stage an extra matinee on Saturday, November 28, starting at 2.30pm. Doors open at 2pm for tea and mince pies, and tickets for this extra session cost £10 for adults and £6 for 16s and under.

Tickets for this matinee presentation go on sale at www.westmeontheatre.co.uk from Friday, November 6.

For director Mary Dawson, the sell-out underlines the popularity of WMT and the quality of their productions.

“It’s fantastic that we’ve sold out and a ringing endorsement of what we do,” said Mary.

“It’s certainly not a one-off. Earlier this year we had a sell-out at the Point Theatre in Eastleigh of Charles Dickens’ The Signal-Man, and before that, Cider with Rosie and Dark Earth Light Sky, the story of Hampshire war poet Edward Thomas,” she said.

Although WMT is an amateur group, it takes a distinctly professional approach to its productions.

“As with The Signal-Man, we’ve commissioned a local writer to adapt the work to create something new,” said Mary. “We’ve done the same with this production – plus we’ve commissioned new music from our long-standing musical director.”
