THERE was no making their mind up - when it came to the 35th anniversary of their smash Eurovision-winning hit, Bucks Fizz knew they had to pull out all the stops.
So the effervescent four-piece hit the road with a corker of a show.
The ’Make Believe Tour’, with Cheryl Baker, Jay Aston, Mike Nolan and new member Bobby McVay, reaches Southsea’s Kings Theatre on Sunday, April 3.
And, as Cheryl Baker told the Post, there’s even ‘the Velcro moment’ which always get a huge audience reaction. She may be 62, but she still gets a kick out of whipping her skirt off for ’Making Your Mind Up’ as she did with millions watching on the Eurovision stage in 1981.
“A big cheer always goes up when we do that, and everyone starts rocking out,” said Cheryl. “I may be a woman of a certain age but I still love the Velcro moment and it is amazing at festivals when thousands of people are up dancing.”
Cheryl believes the legendary skirt-ripping routine was the wow factor element needed to clinch the Eurovision title.
“Without that we wouldn’t have won,” she said. “With Eurovision you have got to do something really special that grabs peoples’ attention. You need to have that sharp intact of breath moment.”
That is what has been lacking, in her view, in our recent entries which have failed to capture the imagination of a global audience.
Bucks Fizz were one of the biggest selling bands of the 80s, with ’Making Your Mind Up’ a number one hit around the world.
It was a crazy time for Bucks Fizz, but Cheryl loved it.
“It was mad but it was wonderful. Mad is great when you are young. We were flying off all over the world, but there was a clause in our contract to say we had to drop everything for ’Top of the Pops’. So we were in Brazil one time and we had to fly back for ’Top of the Pops’ as it was so important then. An appearance on ’Top of the Pops’ meant you rose up the charts.”
’Land of Make Believe’ is one of her favourite Fizz songs. “I love it because it was number one in the New Year of 1982 and it evokes memories of Christmastime then.”
Fans who were youngsters then now bring their own children to shows.
“It’s a real nostalgia trip and a memory of happy times. We give our fans what they want, with all the hits, and it’s a big party.”
