OSCAR Wilde’s greatly admired and much-loved comedy The Importance of Being Earnest stars Gwen Taylor as the formidable Lady Bracknell at Guildford this week and next.
The story follows Jack Worthing’s endeavours to marry Algernon’s cousin, the beautiful Gwendolen. But first he must convince her mother, the fearsome Lady Bracknell, of his respectability.
For Jack, however, this is not as easy as it sounds, having started life abandoned in a handbag at Victoria station.
Directed by Alastair Whatley, this production at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre also stars Susan Penhaligon as the hapless Miss Prism and Kerry Ellis in her first non-singing role as Gwendolen.
Gwen Taylor is best known for playing the title role in the ITV sitcom Barbara, as well as Anne Foster in Coronation Street.
Susan Penhaligon has most recently been in Cabaret alongside Will Young and Louise Redknapp. Renowned theatre star and recording artist Ellis is best known for originating the role of Meat in Queen’s We Will Rock You.
They will be joined on stage by Geoff Aymer, Louise Coulthard, Thomas Howes, Peter Sandys-Clarke and Simon Shackleton.
Performances have already started and continue until February 2.
