Labour promised that taking South Western Railway (SWR) into public ownership would mean better services for passengers.

More than a year on, passengers are still waiting.

Cancellations, delays, overcrowding and short formed trains remain far too common. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of pounds have been wasted on Labour's botched negotiations.

For years, Labour presented nationalisation as the answer to the railways' problems. It was treated as though changing who runs the railway would somehow fix the underlying problems. But public ownership is not a magic wand, and passengers rightly want to see results rather than rhetoric.

I do not think passengers should have to wait for ministers to tell them what is wrong with their railway. They know already.

That is why I launched my railway survey, asking people across Farnham, Haslemere and Liphook what they actually want from the next generation of services.

The response has been clear and consistent.

In Farnham, people want faster journeys into London. In Haslemere, the biggest frustration is overcrowding and short formed trains. In Liphook, passengers want more frequent services throughout the day.

These are the priorities I am now taking directly to South Western Railway.

I recently met SWR at Liphook station to put the results of my survey in front of them. Hundreds of passengers have taken the time to share their experiences, and I expect the railway to listen.

The timing matters. SWR is preparing its first major timetable redesign in decades. This is a huge opportunity to improve services across our area, but only if the people who use the railway every day are properly heard.

My message to SWR is straightforward. Faster journeys from Farnham, less overcrowding at Haslemere and more frequent services at Liphook should be the starting point, not an optional extra.

I will be judging the new timetable against those priorities and I will continue to make the case for the improvements passengers have told me they want.

There is another part of the transport puzzle that cannot be ignored.

Whitehill and Bordon still has poor public transport connections to our railway network. Through my Bordon Taskforce, we have secured improvements to the Number 18 bus service to Farnham, with more frequent journeys better aligned to train times. That is welcome progress, but it only goes so far.

That is why I am continuing my campaign for a dedicated rail bus link to Liphook. I have asked South Western Railway to meet with Stagecoach as part of its timetable planning so that we can properly explore whether this could become a reality.

People pay a lot for their rail tickets. They should not have to put up with unreliable services, overcrowded carriages and cancelled trains.

Labour has had more than a year to demonstrate that its approach can deliver a better railway. Now it is time for South Western Railway to deliver the improvements passengers have been asking for.

I will keep pushing them to do exactly that.
