ALTON College student Alex Scarborough will be representing Great Britain at the 11th Special Olympics World Winter Games in Schladming, Austria, next month.

He will compete in the Alpine Skiing category in both slalom and Super G.

Alex has been skiing since the age of ten when he went on a school trip and was instantly hooked.

He trains once a week on the dry slope at Alpine Snowsports Aldershot and goes on family ski trips every year, visiting Italy, France, Germany and Austria.

Alex is going on the college ski trip to Fiesch in Switzerland during half term, as he did last year, and hopes this year will be just as much fun.

The college ski trip is just one of many opportunities to travel on offer at Alton College – trips, visits and exchange programmes are a key part of student life.

Alex has been to national finals before and is really excited to be given the chance to be competing on the world stage.

He admitted: “I am a little bit nervous, but I am extremely focused and will channel my nervous energy into racing to the best of my ability.

“I love skiing as there are no limits and it is such an adrenalin rush.

“I am extremely proud to be representing my country and hope to have the chance to do it again in the future.”

Alex is currently studying Business and IT at the college and plans to continue skiing after his education at Alton and to hopefully take on his father’s waste and recycling business in the future.
