CHURCHER’S College lower sixth form student Oscar McCall is currently out on the slopes in Italy, attending the British Ski Academy (BSA) in Aosta, until March.
As in previous years, Oscar is competing in the Under-18 England Alpine Squad and the Great Britain Alpine Skiing developmental squad, as well as, for the first time, racing in Federation International de Ski (FIS) races.
This first year in the FIS is considered crucial as it gives the athlete a chance to rack up some FIS points that will allow selection for the World and Europa Cups.
Part of competing in the FIS means McCall will be racing against those older than him – potentially 21 year olds and older, and anyone who is currently ski racing.
This may include World Cup winners and Olympic champions who could, and do, turn up at any of these races at the last minute.
McCall is very keen to spend the whole winter season out on the snow and unlike previous years he will have the opportunity to compete in FIS races practically every weekend, which means spending much more time out in Italy makes sense.
Once he has finished competing in the FIS McCall will be returning to the British Ski Academy at their new Aosta base, where he will be offered full academic support during his time out there.
