FORMER Steep cricketer Jack Campbell has made his debut for England under-19s.

Campbell (18), who has also played for Liphook and Ripsley, was selected for the youth One-Day International between England under-19s and South Africa under-19s at Gosforth.

Campbell’s debut ended in defeat as England under-19s were bowled out for 251 in 50 overs, and South Africa only lost four wickets as they chased the runs in 42 overs.

Left-arm seamer Campbell was selected for his bowling, and he scored one not out batting at number 11 before opening the bowling and finishing with figures of 0-44 off four overs.

Despite the defeat, Campbell, who has been playing for Durham’s second team this year, was proud to make his England under-19s debut.

He said: “I’ve been played for Durham’s second team this season and I got added to the England under-19s squad.

“I found out I was making my debut the night before the match at a team meeting. I had a very nice feeling when I knew I was playing.”

Before the match Campbell received his England cap from former England head coach Andy Flower.

Campbell said: “Andy Flower did a little speech when he gave me my cap, which was nice.”

As well as playing for Durham’s second team, Campbell hopes he will be selected for the England under-19s winter tours this year.

He added: “I’ll be going to a training camp in Loughborough, and, hopefully, I get selected for the tours.”
