Hawkley v Selborne: HAWKLEY batted first and the opening batsmen were immediately in trouble against the pace of Selborne’s Arundell.
After two quick wickets fell Aaron Stewart fought back with cleanly-hit pulls and drives, until he holed out to mid-on for 16. Paul Cross and Liam Lloyd took up the baton, until they too fell for 15 and 16 respectively.
Viv Evans and Sam Cunningham came together with the score on 62 and added a valuable 40 runs before Evans was bowled for 31.
Cunningham kept the momentum going with a rapid 27, taking the score to 135. Hawkley’s tail-enders added useful runs as their innings closed on 164 in the penultimate over before tea.
Selborne’s reply began cautiously in the face of accurate bowling from Hawkley. Liam Lloyd picked up a wicket in his first over when Evans took a sharp low slip catch, and after 12 overs Selborne had scored 25 runs.
A change of bowling bought an immediate wicket as Evans struck in his first over, and he picked up another victim two overs later, while at the other end Stewart added a fourth wicket when Cunningham took a good catch at mid-wicket.
Selborne’s Pink and Lloyd scored freely and their target got closer by the over.
Ed Peel took the ball for the last over with four runs required to win. After three singles and two dot balls the score was level when Pink faced the last ball, which he calmly cut for four to hand Selborne victory. Pink finished on 54 not out and Lloyd on 74 not out.
