Petersfield u-19 Panthers v Locks Heath u-19s: PETERSFIELD under-19 Panthers brought their T20 season to a thrilling close on Sunday, fighting back in a tense final over against Locks Heath to secure a tie.
Batting first, the Panthers mustered a competitive 146 off their 20 overs with useful contributions from Alex Thomas (12), Ben Anscombe (12), Will Raymond (19) and Ben Turk (20). However, it was Jake Wadey, batting at number seven, who once again expertly marshalled the tail, scoring an excellent 33 not out. Left-arm medium pacer Sam Kirby finished with 3-23 off his four overs.
The momentum swung this way and that as Locks Heath set about chasing down the Panthers’ total.
Turk (2-11) removed opener Hughes early on for eight, but Hett and Hoile took the score to 74 with some aggressive strokeplay before Anscombe removed the dangerous Hett for 32.
When Wadey had Hoile smartly stumped by Thomas for 25, and leg-spinner Adam Childs also picked up a wicket and Anscombe took his second, the Panthers seemed on top with Locks Heath on 106-5 off 15 overs.
But Tom Griffiths played well for his 20 before Tom Watson (32 not out), driving as sweetly as his golfing namesake, got after the bowling to such an extent that only two runs were needed off the last over for the win.
The Panthers came back with Joe Clarke, showing enormous composure, bowling a nerveless final over to claim two wickets, including a last-ball wicket, that left the scores tied on 146.
