THE RAIN stayed away as Steep Cricket Club held their fourth annual community day on Sunday.

The day started with coaching drills from Hampshire players for Steep juniors, and the colts then received their medals.

Several Steep players received a soaking in the stocks, before the home team played Headley in a Twenty20 game. Refreshments included a barbecue and bar.

Steep Sunday team captain Jhon Cosgrove, who organised the community day with club captain John Smith, said: “We were super lucky with the weather.

“Ryan Murray and Andy Gorvin came from Hampshire Academy and did some coaching drills with the juniors. They did catches, batting and bowling drills, and it was really great that Hampshire sent the players.

“Just before midday the juniors received their medals, and every junior who turned up got a medal.

“Myself and John Smith were then in the stocks for 30 minutes and were soaked by the juniors, and I was even soaked by my mum.

“Headley then won the Twenty20 match, but it was a friendly game. Each batsman walked out to music thanks to DJ Thomas Mercer.”

Jhon was pleased with how the day went and is looking forward to the fifth community day next year.

He said: “We raised a bit of money for the club which is always good. It was a really fun day and it’s great to get the community involved.

“Next year will be our fifth one and hopefully will be extra special.”
