IT HAS been 125 years since Steep Cricket Club first began life in the community.

Now, the club is preparing to mark the milestone achievement with a weekend of celebrations. People from across the community of all ages are invited to join in, whether or not they are a member of the club.

Cricket coach Jhon Cosgrove said: “It’s a significant milestone for the club. It’s a really good thing that a small, local village club is still going strong after 125 years. We are stronger than ever. We have got a thriving junior set-up.

“It’s a really good position for the club to be in and it’s a great achievement.

“It’s become very successful because of the hard work of lots of people that came together to make it a success.

“Everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet.

“We aren’t desperate to win loads of things. We are there to have fun and have a good sense of community. It’s just a great club.

“We are very lucky to have a good bunch of people of all ages helping us out. Everyone is all doing different things to make the club a success.”

Tomorrow (Friday) there will be a dinner and dance from 7pm at the cricket ground. The next day, the club will be holding a six-a-side tournament. There will be music and a barbecue as well. On Sunday there will be a charity fundraising match against Froxfield, with money going towards a trip to Uganda with Cricket Without Boundaries.

Jhon added: “It’s going to be good for everyone from the club, both young and old, to get together for the whole three days. We are looking forward to it. It’s going to be a very nice weekend.”
