STEEP Cricket Club will now be able to purchase a new roller to spruce up their grounds after being given more than £2,000 by East Hampshire District Council (EHDC).

The club has been using its current roller since the 1970s, but in recent years spare parts and replacements have become harder to find.

Recently, the club has done its own repairs, however these were not a long term option and the decision was made to buy a new machine.

The cricket club has multiple teams and around 300 players - some starting as young as seven years old.

Through various fundraising activities Steep Cricket Club has already raised 70 per cent of the funds needed and this grant has helped it reach its target.

Councillor Julie Butler, EHDC’s portfolio holder for customer service, said: “We are so glad to have been able to help the club with the last push to fund this project.

“The new roller will ensure the club can continue to do what it knows best – and get out and play cricket!”

Rollo Wicksteed, chairman of the club, said: “We are grateful to EHDC for providing this significant piece of funding.

“A new roller may not be the most glamorous piece of cricketing equipment, but it is key to enabling us to continue to maintain our ground to a high standard.

“This benefits our players but is also recognised across the county by visiting teams.”
