A Farnham racing driver has admitted he is living the dream after making a sensational start to this year’s Porsche Club Motorsport Boxster Cup.
Jonny Lovell had only raced at track days before this year, but has taken to his first year of competitive racing like a duck to water – winning five of the first six races in this year’s Porsche Boxster Cup.
The cup is divided into seven rounds – each round comprises qualifying and two 25-minute races.
Lovell finished second in the first race of the opening round of the season at Donington Park, before winning the second race.
“It is a lot of fun,” he said. “I’m living the dream – it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.
“My driving style is to go out quickly on the first three to four laps to build up a good lead, and then ease off to save the tyres.
“Being on pole position allows me to do that.
“I have two sets of tyres to last the whole year, so there is a lot of strategy involved, which I enjoy.
“There are 20 registered drivers, including five women on the grid this year. Porsche do a great job looking after everyone – it’s really inclusive and you don’t need endless amounts of money like the higher levels of racing.”
Lovell is hoping to progress to a higher level of racing after this season, and eventually race at some iconic venues across Europe, although he will probably need sponsorship to achieve this.
“My dream is to race at Le Mans, Spa and the Nurburgring, and to go racing across Europe,” he said. “I will need sponsorship to progress, though.
“I was at Le Mans last weekend for its 100th anniversary. That was my first time there and it has whetted my appetite.”
Next up for Lovell will be the fourth round of the Porsche Boxster Cup at Oulton Park International on Saturday, July 1.
The other three rounds are at Silverstone on July 29, Brands Hatch on September 3 and Snetterton on October 7.
Lovell says anyone who is thinking of getting involved in grassroots racing should take the plunge.
“I would encourage anyone who is thinking of getting into racing to do it – although I suggest having a few lessons first,” he said.
