PETERSFIELD Town need to find the spark which will ignite their season and bring about what many would see as an improbable-looking escape from relegation.

The Rams go into December finding themselves rooted to the bottom of their division for the second season running.

This time last year Petersfield were propping up the Southern League’s Division 1 Central table. Fast forward 12 months and the Rams are in the same scenario again – this time in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division.

With almost half of their league games now gone and only eight points on the board so far this season, a dramatic improvement in form is needed if Petersfield are going to pull off a great escape from relegation.

Chairman Graeme Moir believes the club has the coaching and playing staff in place to transform their current dismal fortunes.

He said: “We need what I would call the Pedro Mendes moment to turn our season around. I can recall Pompey’s great escape from relegation in 2005-06. They looked dead and buried in the Premier League that season.

“Then they played Manchester City at home and Mendes hit two long range shots in to get a win from absolutely nowhere.

“With that result the whole atmosphere around the club changed and Portsmouth were up and running. Their form was then completely unrecognisable from what had gone on in the games before that.”
