Aldershot Town manager Tommy Widdrington was delighted with his side after they swept aside play-off rivals Altrincham 2-0 at the EBB Stadium on Saturday evening.
Goals from Tyler Frost and Lorent Tolaj late in the first half gave the Shots the three points.
The Shots took the lead on 45 minutes. Ollie Harfield’s cross from the left-hand side was half-cleared to Frost just inside the box. Frost took a touch before unleashing a powerful left-foot shot into the top right-hand corner.
The second arrived in first-half stoppage time. Jack Barham’s shot was parried by Altrincham keeper Matt Gould to Tolaj, who fired home from close range.
“I don’t think I could pick any single lad out for extra praise,” said Widdrington.
“It was a great team performance on and off the ball.
“The energy and intensity when we didn’t have it was excellent and it needed to be because they’re a very good side.
“Phil’s got them (Altrincham) working exactly how he wants them to and for us to be able to limit them to what we did was really pleasing.
“When we win more duals than the opposition in a game we tend to win the game.
“I know we’ve got a good armoury in terms of attacking.
“We’ve spread goals right across the team this season.”
Saturday’s win was the perfect response to last Tuesday night’s 5-0 defeat at home to AFC Fylde, and Widdrington was pleased with his side’s reaction.
“We had a blooded nose after Tuesday night, make no bones about it,” said Widdrington.
“Fylde came here and did a job on us. We didn’t make excuses – we took it on the chin and we got ourselves up off the canvas.
“We’ve had a really tough run of fixtures on paper, but it gets no easier. We just move on.
“We don’t harp on about how well we’ve done when we’ve won and we don’t whinge too much when we’ve lost. We just move on to the next game.
“Where we are at this stage of the season is a huge improvement as a football club, and we just want to keep doing what we’re doing.”
The Shots pressed Altrincham impressively throughout the game, and Widdrington was pleased to see his side get their rewards just before half-time.
“There would have been a tinge of disappointment in my head had we gone in not leading at half-time,” said Widdrington.
“They started the game well enough – they had a few things – but I thought we were on the front foot most of the first half.
“One or two lads who normally would have polished off a couple of the chances didn’t take them, but we kept going and kept knocking on the door.”
