ALRESFORD Town exited the Southampton Senior Cup last Tuesday night after slipping to a 3-1 defeat at Sholing.

The Magpies started the match disastrously and found themselves 3-0 down by half time.

Barry Mason gave the hosts the lead when he seized on an under-hit back pass and slotted the ball into the goal.

Mason then doubled his and Sholing’s tally when he followed up after a good save from Alresford keeper Dan Kempson and swept the ball into the corner of the goal.

Lee Wort then made it 3-0 to the hosts when his shot was deflected and spun into the goal.

Tom Sands pulled a goal back for the Magpies late on when he nudged the ball past Sholing keeper Ryan Gosney, but the goal was nothing more than a consolation.

Alresford produced the perfect response on Saturday though, when they won 2-1 at Amesbury Town to move up to seventh place in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division.

Mike Weatherall gave the hosts the lead, but Chris Mason equalised for the Magpies when he slotted the ball into the corner of the goal.

Sam Burt then scored the winner to give the visitors the three points.
