DELIGHTED Petersfield Town manager Mark Summerhill praised his side after they picked up two wins in the past week to extend their unbeaten run to 12 games.
The Rams won 2-1 at Bournemouth in the First Round proper of the FA Vase last Tuesday night, before winning 2-1 at home to Downton in Division 1 of the Sydenhams Wessex League on Saturday.
Petersfield have now won 11 and drawn one of their past 12 games in all competitions.
“It was a really good performance against Downton,” said Summerhill.
“We dominated for large periods. We let them back in it at the end of the game, but we manage those spells much better now than we used to. We manage games really well now.
“We’re in a good place at the moment and we’re looking the part, although when we get the second goal we have a habit of taking our foot off the pedal.
“We need to be better at 2-0 up and see games out 2-0.”
Rain earlier in the week meant conditions weren’t ideal at Love Lane on Saturday, but Summerhill was pleased with how his side adapted.
“The pitch was wet and it was very difficult conditions,” said the Petersfield manager.
“Downton play good football and didn’t really adapt to the conditions, so those conditions suited us. We play quite a direct style and we played the ball into threatening areas, whereas they played a lot of football in their own half.
“It was a great result, and we did it without Harry Bedford, Harry Tremlett and Will Essai.
“To beat teams without three key players shows how far we’ve come. We’ve got a very talented squad.”
The FA Vase win at Bournemouth meant Petersfield claimed another Wessex League Premier Division scalp, and Summerhill says his side were well worth the win.
“We were better than Bournemouth,” he said.
“They couldn’t cope with us in the first half. We were dominant for so long and we could have been 4-0 up. We ran out of steam in the last 15 minutes, but we held on.
“Matt Low played out wide and was a threat. He works his socks off and sets an example for everyone to look up to. The lads are working so hard for each other and are throwing their bodies on the line.
“We want to keep this run going, but when the defeat comes we need to get over it.
“I might need to readjust my expectations.”
