PETERSFIELD Town captain Ryan Woodford is hoping his side’s good form in the FA Cup will spark a revival for their league fortunes.
Rams boss Ian Saunders would gladly swap the three wins his side have enjoyed in the Emirates FA Cup this season for nine points in the Evo-Stik League Southern Division 1 Central.
While Petersfield have been getting rave reviews for their best-ever run in the world’s most famous cup competition, opponents in Division 1 Central have been queueing up to take three points from them.
The Rams sit second from bottom in the table, having taken just one win and six points from their first eight games at step four level of the non-league pyramid system.
However, Woodford is not concerned about his side’s league position at present and the skipper is confident the Rams can enjoy more successes in the FA Cup this season.
“In terms of the FA Cup, we’ve been superb and to take this club to the furthest position we’ve ever been in has been fantastic for everyone involved at Petersfield.
“After scoring against Moneyfields and then helping us to beat Weymouth as well, I was devastated to be suspended for the Cirencester match.
“But, playing the role I do for the club, it’s natural for me to pick up bookings – just maybe not as quickly as I have done so far this season.
“I think we’re more than good enough to handle St Albans and, as a group of players, we’re not fazed by bigger teams or concerned by what they do or who plays for them.
“In my opinion, I think there’s no limits to what we can achieve in the FA Cup.”
While the cup run is important in helping to raise the profile of the club and swell the coffers as well, Woodford realises that Petersfield’s league form needs to start improving soon.
He added: “As a group, we know we need points on the board in the league and more consistency and experience when it comes to winning games.
“I hope we can push for a top ten finish if not a play-off position this season as we’ve showed we are more than capable of this.
“We have been extremely unlucky in the opening eight games of the season with our league position miles away from a fair reflection of our application and performances in those games.
“Our results in the cup also show what we are capable of.”
