TRIBUTES have flooded in following the death of Petersfield Town’s long serving gateman.
Bill Underwood has helped the Rams out in various roles over the last 30 years but he will be best remembered for his role on the turnstile entrances to Love Lane.
Through rain and shine, winter and summer, Bill took the entry money for first team and reserve team matches and will be sadly missed by many at the club.
Chairman Graeme Moir said: “I was really sad to hear the news of Bill’s passing.
“He was one of the club’s most committed supporters – even when he wasn’t feeling well you would still find him on the gate every Saturday.
“Bill always had a view on club matters or matches but his backing for everyone at the club was always 100 per cent. He will be a big loss to us at Love Lane.”
Former Petersfield chairman David Ayre added:?“This is a really sad day for the football club.
“I cannot put into words what Bill meant to me and the whole club.
“Bill Underwood was one of the truest clubman that there has been at Love Lane in all the years I?have known the club.” Bill passed away at his home in East Meon, aged 70, last week.
His funeral will take place on Wednesday, February 1, at The Oaks Crematorium, Havant, at 12.15pm.
A wake will be held afterwards in the clubhouse at the Love Lane stadium.
The family have requested that anyone attending the funeral should wear bright colours.
