CLANFIELD made it four games unbeaten with a 4-2 win against Hedge End Town on Saturday afternoon to progress to the last 16 of the Hampshire Trophy Cup.

The visitors started brightly and took the lead with a goal from a corner. The delivery was swung in towards goal and hit the back post and flew into the net.

Clanfield responded well to the setback and equalised through Owen Milne. He played a one-two on the edge of the box and lifted the ball over the keeper and into the net to make it 1-1.

The home side took the lead for the first time in the second half. A ball down the channel gave Milne the chance to go through on goal and he lifted the ball over the keeper, but his effort hit the post. Luke Grice was following up and tapped in from two yards out.

A lack of concentration from Clanfield allowed Hedge End to play a ball in behind and get back on level terms at 2-2.

Clanfield composed themselves and regained the lead soon afterwards when Jake Hughes was brought down in the box and Oli Amos scored the resulting penalty.

Hedge End pushed for an equaliser, but Clanfield hit them on the counter-attack and Elliot Sills completed a move with a fine finish which hit the underside of the crossbar and went in.

Clanfield boss Lee Blakely said: “I’m happy to progress through to the next round and continue the unbeaten run.

“We were not at our best, especially in the second half, but we still kept going and got the win and did the job required.

“There is great confidence in the squad at the minute and knowing how to get the result when you’re not at your best shows great character.”
