CLANFIELD’S unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday as an early goal from Overton United was enough to take the three points, with the home side missing the chance to break into the top six.
Clanfield started the game brightly and had two good chances, but they were soon punished for their profligacy.
A long ball over the top caught the Clanfield defence flat footed and Overton’s Finley Hall found the bottom corner of the net to give the visitors an early lead.
Clanfield huffed and puffed in the second half, but they lacked a little spark and were unable to find an equaliser.
There were half chances at both ends, but Overton saw the game out pretty comfortably to leave Peel Park with the three points.
The defeat leaves Clanfield in eighth place in the Hampshire Premier League Senior Division.
Clanfield manager Lee Blakely said: “That result hurt and this is the most disappointed I have felt since becoming manager in the summer.
“It was a great chance to go sixth and pull away from the mid-table and bottom half teams. We have had a few chances of pushing into the top six this season and seem to not perform in these important games.
“The lads’ commitment and work rate is top draw but we just seem to go missing when we need to get hold of the game and dictate the play and be positive in what we do.
“It’s something we need to work on as I know the current squad can do it, but it’s frustrating as it’s stopping us progressing to the next stage.
“We now look forward to a good, tough game on Saturday against Paulsgrove.”
